*re-reads the KD thread, blinks*
Nav edited his post; when he initally posted, which was shortly after I posted, he awarded us the points. But then he must have re-read the time stamp on my post and decided to hold us to the 36-hour deadline. Drat...

Ah, now your post makes sense! I did wonder if you knew something I hadn't when I read it!
Still thinking and looking...

A maybe - I don't know if it would qualify as 'sounds' or just a single 'sound'...
The Horn-call of Buckland
"FEAR! FIRE! FOES!
The Brandybucks were blowing the Horn-call of Buckland, that had not been sounded for a hundred years, not since the white wolves came in the Fell Winter, when the Brandywine was frozen over." FotR, A Knife in the Dark
I've only really looked through TH and LotR so The Sil is still worth checking. I'm off to bed now but I'll check back ehre in the morning - deadline is 2pm my time so i can post last-minute if need be.

That sounds good to me, Elarith - Ihaven't been able to find a closer match to the question...

I've flicked through the Sil but didn't come across anything. Looks like that answer will have to do!

Well, it's posted. I'm not convinced it's the answer Nav was looking for but it still fits the question (mostly!)

Wow - no wonder we weren't convinced that it was the right answer!
"Mordor, you are correct. 2 points. Hank, the answer provided was not expected, but acceptable. 2 points. The expected answer was this:
Hank: What sounds were of rare occurence? Voiceless nasals. "According to the principle observed above, Grade 6 should then have represented the voiceless nasals; but since such sounds (exemplified by Welsh nh or ancient English hn) were of very rare occurence in the languages concerned, Grade 6 (21-24) was most often used for the weakest or 'semi-vocalic' consonants of each series." (RotK, Appendix E, Writing, The Feanorean Letters)
The score is now: Mordor 8 Hank 6
The final questions: Mordor: What could bring forth in every group mighty, odd, and even venturesome people? Hank: Who was going to speak with someone he characterized as gathering nonvascular plants?"
Plants? Hmmm...

Wow, that thing on the languages was really obscure! (Especially compared to the relative ease of mordor's question!) At least we got the points.
Ok, I'm pretty sure the answer is Gandalf and it's right at the end of LotR - he says he's going to go and speak with Tom Bombadil because Bombadil is a 'moss-gatherer'. I assume moss comes under the heading of 'nonvascular plants' - I did Biology at A Level but have no idea what 'nonvascular' means!

Here's the quote:
"'I am with you at present,' said Gandalf, 'but soon I shall not be. I am not coming to the Shire. (...)
'But if you would know, I am turning aside soon. I am going to have a long talk with Bombadil: such a talk as I have not had in all my time. He is a moss-gatherer, and I have been a stone doomed to rolling. But my rolling days are ending, and now we shall have much to say to one another.'" RotK, Homeward Bound

Thoughts on Mordor's question - something to do with the Took-blood in the hobbits, more especially Bilbo and Frodo? I'll have to have a think about that one.

You beat me to it *g* good job. That's a heck of a lot easier of a question than the previous ones. You also had my same thoughts on Mordor's question, though saying "every group" is kind of odd...

Well I'm going to post our answer.
Mordor has posted their answer as the Took family and the quote fits the question - the mention of different generations is what I suppose the 'groups' bit was.

Doubt we're going to get a steal attempt, but to lose by only 2 points to the minions is pretty good going.

*fumes at the fact that they lost by two points when they could have tied* Ah well, nothing to do but rip rivvy to shreds, I guess...
