And if it's Gimli, I can't find it at Helm's Deep...

Well, I've skimmed the places I feel likely in The Hobbit and LotR, and the best I could come up with was Ducky's first quote. But the questions haven't even been up for 5 hours yet, so keep looking guys! I'm not sure if 'slashing' can quite be linked with 'hacking', but I'm sure we can sell that quote if we can't find anything better. But we're doing pretty good so far, I think, so keep up the good work! Oh, and anyone checked The Sil yet? That's my worst area, so if anyone knows it well...

That's what I was thinking of, yes. But he slashes and then goes off singing, and isn't singing whilst doing something. Hmmm. Back to the books!

kingo that looks very good. we do need to prove that hacking and slashing are the same thing. I can't remember right now which site almost everyone uses for that but I'll get it out the archives and try to find a good entry.

double post but that is allowed here. I just thought of something, maybe the dwarfs were singing when they hacked out the mines of moria or the kingdom under the mountain. the last one should be in the hobbit. the other one in the fellowship of the ring.

ok, third post of the evening, here is an entry from www.thesaurus.com (the source of these kind of entries also has to be posted) : Main Entry: hack Part of Speech: verb Definition: cut Synonyms: chop, clip, fell, gash, hackle, hew, lacerate, mangle, mutilate, notch, slash, whack Source: Roget's New Millennium™ Thesaurus, First Edition (v 1.3.1) Copyright © 2007 by Lexico Publishing Group, LLC. All rights reserved. hack and slash are synonyms, so the answer is looking pretty good. but let's keep looking, we still have a lot of time.

Checked the Sil and I can't find anywhere where hacking and singing go together.

Okay, I'll keep looking and since we have a decent possibility I'll start skimming through for the steal too, just so that we are prepared. Good luck with your hunting, I'll catch up with you again in about 8 hours!

"Last of all Húrin stood alone. Then he cast aside his shield, and wielded an axe two-handed; and it is sung that the axe smoked in the black blood of the troll-guard of Gothmog until it withered, and each time that he slew Húrin cried: 'Aurë entuluva! Day shall come again!' Seventy times he uttered that cry; but they took him at last alive, by the command of Morgoth, for the Orcs grappled him with their hands, which clung to him still though he hewed off their arms; and ever their numbers were renewed, until at last he fell buried beneath them."~The Silmarillion, Of the Fifth Battle: Nirnaeth Arnoediad.
This is the only thing that comes remotely close to what is wanted that I could find in a skimming of the Sil. Unlikely, no? It only uses the words "slew" and "wielded", though hacking is the common way to use an axe, particulary two-handed. Plus he isn't singing, just "crying" a sort of battle yell. But just thought I'd allay peoples' fears as to the Sil.

'Twas the closest thing I came across too, Ducky, but alas! No singing. Just noticed Elerina's post thought on the dwarves singing as they carved out Moria or Erebor. I'll have a look but all I can picture now are the Seven Dwarves from Snow White singing 'Hi ho! Hi ho! It's off to work we go!'

Actually on checking my thesaurus I have the example 'he sang out a greeting' with the synonyms call out, call, cry, cry out, shout, yell, trumpet, roar and bellow. So perhaps Ducky's Hurin quote is correct and we just need to twist 'sing' to our own evil purposes.

Mmm...except for the difference in person, I actually like the host of Rohan answer the best so far, because it's happening at the same time, and they actually are singing (unlike Hurin)

1. The banner kicks butt! Good job on that, guys! 2. Eomer was the first thing that came to my mind, reading the question. I'll scan my resources for other possibilities, but I'll agree that either he or the Rohirrim host are the best choices so far...

Okay, I haven't turned up anything else yet, but plenty of time to keep looking. That Sil quote looks a good alternative, especially since the question is 'he', meaning that the host of the Rohirrim won't fit. Just over 20 hours to go, we're doing great so far!
