MT have posted their guess Eol from The Sil. Perhaps ours is from there also?

I looked through the chapters about moria and I couldn't find anything there. I like the answer about the rohirrim the most, but I can't find proof that hacking and slaying is the same thing. I think it's time to start deciding which answer we're going to use.

alright, small censor on my last post, I don't agree with the rohirrim answer, we need a 'he' not an army. I remembered the question wrong. in that case, I think the answer with Bilbo in it is the best.

Yes, I think that the Bilbo answer does tick all the boxes, alongside the thesaurus extract; and whilst the Hurin quote is quite good, it is partly implied. So yeah, I say go with Bilbo.
Also, with only about 8 hours to go I think that we need to start thinking about who is going to post too. It would be possible for me to post, but not really practical. So if anyone is naturally around near the deadline, it would be better if they posted. (And because I can't see page one right now, I'll repeat the Jr Drill posting catchphrase- 'Don't forget the source!')

Bilbo sounds ok to me, better than the other suggestions anyway. Pity none of them have that really close fit.
I very much doubt that I'll be on around deadline - it falls at 4.19 AM my time (that's right, there's a 4.19 AM apparently - I don't care much to see it myself). I can do it but only as a last, sleepy resort. Helekwen, I'd think that this would rule you out of posting as well unless you fancy rising super-early?

No, I was thinking of posting an hour or two earlier, which would be 2:30-3:30, a little later than I usually stay up but possible if all else fails. (Though knowing me, I'll probably stay up anyway, just to make sure that it goes up without any problems.)

ok, so three votes for bilbo. I'm going to be back in a half an hour or so and then I think I'll post it unless someone can garantee me that he or she will post it. we lost some points last season because no one posted the answer because everyone thought that someone else was going to post it and I really don't want to start the season with that. so, half an hour and then I'm posting bilbo as an answer.

I see that they mixed up the singular and the plural in their answer...it says "they" instead of "he", and yet they answered the singular Eol...does this mean we could have said the Rohirrim, or are they likely to be wrong?

they did mix that up. but they answer sounded perfect. I think eol wasn't alone at that moment so he was aware the danger they were in. but if you have another suggestion, we can steal their anwer. we have about 6 hours left to do that. but I really don't know any other answer to that qusetion. I'll think about it.

Um, this could be an English English/ American English issue, because I don't see any problem with their answer- if Phil was looking for a plural answer, then surely the question would read 'on their mindS'? If one is trying to hide the gender or doesn't know the gender of the singular person they are refering to, then using 'they' and 'their' makes perfect sense. (If that shaky explaination makes any sense!) But although I think that their answer is good, we should look for a steal anyway just in case.

The trouble with 'they' is that as well as being the plural form it can also be used, in the common vernacular, in place of 'he / she' where the gender of the person is not made clear. Phil could've used 'one' instead, I suppose, but it makes the question sound rather archaic.
Anyway, both ours and MTs were right so no chance of a steal.
Next question: Minas Tirith Question I: Who was unsure whether they had awoken? Hank Question I: What people were given lands by virtue of a bond of kinship?

The one that jumps to my mind is Rohan again...wasn't there some sort of pact made between the Stewards and the Rohirrim after Eorl came riding down? I'd have to check that in the Appendices or Unfinished Tales.

first, unfinished tales isn't a book we use for the Jr. Drill competition. and I'm thinking Rohirrim as well.

But then there's the virtue of kinship part - Eorl was granted lands by Cirion primarily in lieu of their aid at the Battle of Celebrant, not because the two were close kin (Rohirrim being reckoned amongst 'Men of the Twilight', relatives sundered from the Dunedain when Numenor arose). Still, could work.
Off to snoop around my books.
