I first thought of Feanor when he came with the ships in Belerinad and then he burned them. But I'm not sure if I understood question well.

Been searching through The Hobbit, and it could be Roäc: "O Thorin son of Thrain, and Balin son of Fundin," he croaked (and Bilbo could understand what he said, for he used ordinary language and not bird-speech). "I am Roäc son of Carc."' The Hobbit, The Gathering of the Clouds
It covers the 'widely understood form' part but not quite annoucning his presence as the dwarves and Bilbo saw him arrive. Will keep looking.

Other thoughts - Éomer intorducing himself in Westron to Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas, and the Orcs talking amongst themselves in the common tongue.

Ok, going to post it because I've found nothing better in my search all through LotR - did a brief check of the Sil for Mandos and Fëanor too - and I really don't want a repeat of the last question's situation. Not totally convinced about this answer but it might do if Phil is lenient.
Rivvy's also posted their answer and it was what I thought it would be, so unlikely to get a steal from it.

*continues talking to self*
Rather weird turn of events - neither answer was as expected, but ours was accepted and Rivendell's wasn't. I think Phil has been rather lenient towards us, but I'm not going to complain! So scores are 4 - 2.
Hank Question III: Who's busyness prompted a friend to conceal illness? Imladris Question III: Whose intended deaths were to serve a purpose of illumination?
Nothing immediately springs to mind for either. Off to have a think.

I'm sorry I've been gone, but I was busy at the end of spring break. I see I didn't manage to post the last question in time...grrr! But at least we got that other one.
I know what our question is, btw...Sam's busyness after the Scouring of the Shire, etc, caused Frodo to conceal his illness on the anniversary of whatever. I'll look it up and get back to ya soon.

This should work:
"Time went on, and 1421 came in. Frodo was ill again in March, but with a great effort he concealed it, for Sam had other things to think about. (The first of Sam and Rosie's children was born on the twenty-fifth of March, a date that Sam noted)."~ROTK, The Grey Havens
I put that last sentence in parentheses because I'm not sure it's needed. Look good? I'm thinking about the Rivvy question...seems like something that should be a death made for an example to someone else...

I've had a flash on the Rivvy question. How does this look?:
"There came great beasts, like moving houses in the red and fitful light, the mumakil of the Harad dragging through the lanes amid the fires huge towers and engines. Yet their captain cared not greatly what they did nor how many might be slain: their purpose was only to test the strength of the defence and to keep the men of Gondor busy in many places."~ROTK, The Siege of Gondor
So, the answer would be the Mumakil, I guess.

By the way, guys...we really REALLY need to win this match if they decide to have a three team tournament. Heck, even a four team tournament. Because even if we win we'll be in 3rd place for the standings. If we lose, we will probably be in 4th. Sooo...yeah. I'm guessing we're going to have a 4 team tourney, but who knows? We just really need this win.

Wow! I come back and find not one but TWO answers! I had a bit flick through the Sil but nothing stood out. Both of those answers look fine to me, so good work Ducky. I think you can take or leave the parenthesised sentence - it explains why Sam was busy but the question doesn't strictly require it.

Posted the answer just to pressure Imladris *g* Who knows, maybe we can go for a steal this round. That would be lovely.

Interesting...I notice Phil edited his post to not say he thought Rivvy unsportsmanlike to take the steal first round...wonder if someone complained about that, lol.

I would LOVE to steal - especially give Rivvy's cheeky steal with the first question. *crosses fingers, toes, and eyes*
Actually, it was Lori who edited out Phil's comment about unsporting behaviour with something about being civil - he must've then gone and edited out her edit comment as well.

I didn't see what Phil wrote, was it that unsporting that it had to be edited. I'm sorry btw for my absence. RL is still crazy and I have my own match to mod. bttw, if you know any difficult questions, please post them. I could definitely use them. ducky, the answers look great. and I hope we'll get a steal. I would love to win this match, especially after the way Rivvy started the match.

To be honest, I didn't think it was offensive, but then I'm not in Rivvy - Phil basically said that he found Rivendell's steal attempt to be unsporting because Ducky had already posted the answer, just a few minutes after the deadline, so they basically copied our answer for the steal. Phil said there was nothing in the rules against it so he had to award the points but he obviously wasn't happy about doing so. *shrugs*
No answer from Rivvy yet but they've got over 8 hours yet. I'll check back in the morning.
