We have about 12 hours left to post our answer, and I don't feel like doing it, so someone else can do the honours (though if nobody does I will be back about an hour before the deadline to do it anyway, haha)
Mordor has sent a challenge in, though I don't think it very likely to succeed.

And to clarify that the wood was made up of Huorns:
'For a while the three companions walked together, speaking of this and that turn of the battle, and they went down from the broken gate, and passed the mounds of the fallen on the greensward beside the road, until they stood on Helm's d**e and looked down into the Coomb. The Death Down already stood there, tall and stony, and the great trampling and scoring of the grass by Huorns could plainly be seen.' ~The Passing of the Grey Company, RotK

BAH, they accepted Mordor's challenge and took away our last steal! *ish not happy* Anyways, theirs wasn't accepted, so we lead 8-6 at the minute. So we must get this to win.
New questions:
Mordor Q5: Who's demise, upon discovery, was avoided?
Team Hank Q5: What bounded circle contained only one way of escape?
Deadline is Friday, 1:32am PT/ 9:32am GMT/ 4:32am Ducky-time

Score's actually 6 all - our steal attempt was rendered void when Mordor's appeal was accepted so we lose those 2 points. Grrr!
I was also thinking mountains for ours as well, but the Encircling Mountains round Gondolin. Will check Sil for a quote.

Great! Ela, I think you and I are alone on the quote-hunting, but Ducky is pouring out suggestions on command, I'll post those later

Didn't have time to check for the Encircling Mountains quote. If it's anywhere, I'd guess it's under 'Of Tuor and the Fall of Gondolin'. They block up the Dry River that is the only entrance / exit for the city, but Idril orders a secret escape tunnel to be built.
Will check back early tomorrow morning as a fail-safe.

Got nothing in the "Of Tuor and the Fall of Gondolin" chapter that really worked conveniently, but I did pick this up in "Of the Noldor in Beleriand":
"It has been told how by the guidance of Ulmo Turgon of Nevrast discovered the hidden vale of Tumladen; and that (as was after known) lay east of the upper waters of Sirion, in a ring of mountains tall and sheer, and no living thing came there save the eagles of Thorondor. But there was a deep way under the mountains delved in the darkness of the world by waters that flowed out to join the streams of Sirion; and this way Turgon found, and so came to the green plain amid the mountains, and saw the island-hill that stood there of hard smooth stonel for the vale had been a great lake in ancient days."
We got the "ring" to describe the circle bounded around, and the way in...but it's not an "escape". Nor is it explicitly the only one. However, here's what I got in the other chapter:
"Therefore in that time the very entrance to the door in the Encircling Mountains was caused to be blocked up; and thereafter none went ever forth from Gondolin on any errand of peace or war, while that city stood."
That's the circle and the establishment of no way out. Then, a bit later:
"But Idril Celebrindal was wise and far-seeing, and her heart misgave her, and foreboding crept upon her spirit as a cloud. Therefore in that time she let prepare a secret way, that should lead down from the city and passing out beneath the surface of the plain issue far beyond the walls, northward of Amon Gwareth;"
So we are given the way out there, then. Maybe that's not as far-fetched as I thought. Sorry, tired, lol. I guess that's looking like our best bet. I'll not post it yet, but I will soon unless I happen on something bloody brilliant (which I won't).

hmm, shame there's no nice neat quote. I can't think of anything else, I'm afraid. Are you posting the answer?

Eek, shouldn't the answer be the Encircling Mountains and not Gondolin?

Ducky, thanks for posting! OK, not one of the Q5 answers has been accepted, Ducky, I've forwarded you the email Elendil sent Ela and I , since I feel you have a right to know the score and all...
So... Tie breaker rounds! And I can't take any part in the next one, because I'm in London until late Sunday night, my time! *groans in frustration* I'm sooooo sorry for leaving you two in the lurch like this, but I have faith in you, do me proud and I'll be back in time for the next question! *huggles both muchly and showers with Dr Pepper and cookies to boost brain power. See ya'll Sunday night!
